Dental Crowns in Richmond, VA
If you have a cracked, decayed, or damaged tooth, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your dentist sooner rather than later. Dental problems won’t get better on their own over time. On the contrary, they can often worsen and lead to more serious oral health complications. Luckily, the trusted team at Glen Forest Dental Co. can quickly and easily restore your smile’s health and function with our restorative dental treatments, including dental crowns (which some patients like to call a “tooth crown” or a “dental cap”). Before you schedule your free consultation, here’s what you should know about dental crowns.
What is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns encapsulate damaged teeth to protect them from further damage. They are among the most common restorative dental treatments and are highly effective at preventing teeth from experiencing further damage while simultaneously restoring their natural appearance and function.
What Do Dental Crowns Treat?
Dental crowns can be used to treat several dental problems that affect people of all ages, including:
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Severely worn teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Teeth that have undergone a root canal
- Teeth with significant aesthetic issues
- Missing teeth that have been replaced with dental implants
What Are the Advantages of a Tooth Crown?
If you have a tooth that is damaged or broken, a tooth crown could help you improve your oral health. Some of the benefits a tooth crown can provide are:
- Protecting fractured teeth
- Strengthening weak teeth
- Preserving your natural tooth (preventing tooth loss)
- Improving the appearance of your smile
- Being an affordable, convenient dental restoration
Does Dental Crown Treatment Hurt?
The comfort of our patients is always a top priority at Glen Forest Dental Co. We strive to provide each patient with professional dental care in a friendly, relaxed setting. While your damaged tooth may be causing you discomfort, having a dental crown placed over it shouldn’t hurt, and any area being prepped for the crown will be numbed. After the procedure, it’s normal to experience minor tenderness, but this should go away within 24 hours or so.
Are Tooth Crowns Noticeable?
At Glen Forest Dental Co., our dental crowns are made from porcelain due to their natural appearance and durability. Because of this, your dental crown should blend beautifully with its surrounding teeth and shouldn’t be noticeable at all.
How Long Does a Tooth Crown Appointment Take?
Crowns are done over two appointments. At your first appointment, your tooth will be “prepped”, your perfect shade will be chosen, and we’ll scan your tooth or take an “impression” so your crown is molded to fit your smile properly. You will leave this appointment wearing a temporary crown so that you never have to go without an aesthetically fitting tooth. Most patients can expect their initial crown “prep” appointment to take around 1-2 hours, but this may be longer or shorter depending on how many crowns you’re having placed, where they’re located, and the condition of your mouth. Your scan or impressions are then sent to a specialized dental lab, and you’ll return 2-3 weeks later for the placement of your permanent crown. Having a crown placed is typically fast and smooth On the day of your permanent crown delivery, your appointment can be as short as 30 minutes!
How Long Do Dental Caps Last?
With good oral hygiene habits, you can expect your dental crown to last as long as a decade. To keep your crown in tip-top shape, keep these tips in mind:
- Brush your teeth two times a day
- Use mouthwash and floss daily
- Don’t bite down on hard items that could damage your crown
- Visit the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings
