Porcelain Veneer Procedure
If the dentist determines that you’re a good candidate for porcelain veneers, having them placed in your mouth will occur over the course of two dental visits. At your first appointment, the dentist will get your tooth (or teeth) ready for the veneer by removing a very small amount of its enamel. After your tooth has been prepared, they will take an impression of it and send it off to a dental lab where your custom veneer will be fabricated. While you’re waiting for your permanent veneer to be complete, a temporary one will be placed over your tooth. When your permanent veneer is finished, you’ll return to the dentist to have it placed. The dentist will attach it to the surface of your tooth, then make adjustments, such as trimming it down, to look as natural as possible.
How to Care for Permanent Veneers
It’s important to take proper care of your permanent veneers to ensure that they stay radiant and strong. Fortunately, caring for veneers is as easy as caring for your own teeth. Here’s how to make the most of your permanent veneers:
- Brush your teeth two times a day
- Floss daily
- Don’t bite down on hard items that could damage your veneers
- If you grind your teeth, wear a mouth (or “occlusal”) guard to bed (occlusal guards can be fitted and made by your dentist)
