What is a Dental Extraction?
A dental extraction, or tooth extraction, is a dental procedure that involves the complete removal of a tooth from its socket. A qualified dentist or oral surgeon typically performs this procedure, and it may be necessary for a variety of reasons.
Why Would You Need To Get A Tooth Pulled?
There are several reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary, including severe tooth decay or infection, overcrowding of teeth, impaction, gum disease, tooth damage or trauma, or to make room for orthodontic treatment (though this is relatively rare). Your dentist will carefully evaluate your dental health and recommend a tooth extraction if necessary. While tooth extraction is always a last resort, it is a quick and effective way of ridding the body of pain or infection.
What are the Different Types of Tooth Extractions?
There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical. Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible and easily accessible, while surgical extractions are necessary for teeth that have not fully emerged or are impacted. Both versions of this procedure are very routine and done in-office.
What Should You Expect When Having a Tooth Pulled?
Before the tooth extraction, the dentists will review your medical history and take an x-ray of the affected tooth. Before the procedure, you will be made comfortable in your chair. We can provide blankets, pillows, headphones, and sunglasses so you can lay back and relax! We can also offer anti-anxiety medication for patients with difficulty with dental procedures to ensure optimal comfort. During the procedure, the dentist will numb the area completely and use special tools to loosen and remove the tooth. Most often, our dentists will also do what’s called “bone grafting” at the time of extraction to fortify the surrounding bone to prevent any movement or changes in the surrounding bone structure and to leave the area strong enough to withstand an implant in the future. After the procedure, you will be given instructions on how to care for the area and manage any pain or swelling, which is typically mild. Healing time from extraction is very quick. You’ll be back to feeling like your normal self in just a couple of days!
Are There Alternatives to Tooth Removal?
In some cases, there may be alternatives to dental extractions, such as root canal therapy, dental crowns, or other restorative treatments. Extraction is always a last resort, which you and your dentist will discuss. Your dentist will carefully evaluate your dental health and recommend the best treatment.
Is A Tooth Extraction Painful?
You will be completely numbed for any extraction procedure. The tooth extraction procedure itself is usually not painful. However, some pressure may be felt during the procedure. After the procedure, there may be some mild pain and swelling, which can be managed with anti-inflammatories and ice packs.
How Much Does a Tooth Extraction Cost?
The cost of a tooth extraction can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure and your insurance coverage. At Glen Forest Dental Co in Richmond, VA, we work with our patients to ensure they receive the care they need.
